Students receiving vocational education at higher education institutions and who are required to undertake internships during their higher education in accordance with the relevant legislation are insured against occupational accidents and occupational diseases pursuant to subparagraph (b) of Article 5 of Law No. 5510 on Social Insurance and General Health Insurance, published in the Official Gazette dated 16 June 2006 and numbered 26200, and these students are considered insured under subparagraph (a) of the first paragraph of Article 4. If a medical leave report is issued for the student, a notification must be made electronically by the relevant university unit through the Notification of Non-Working Entry screen available in the SGK Employer System. This notification must be made within five working days following the entitled medical leave period (Section 7.1.6.2 of SGK Circular No. 2011/50 dated 13 June 2011). If the notification is not made electronically and within the prescribed period, an administrative fine amounting to one-tenth of the monthly minimum wage per insured person shall be imposed; if it is not made at all, an administrative fine amounting to one-half of the monthly minimum wage per insured person shall be imposed.
Work instructions are prepared to ensure that tasks are carried out correctly, safely, and in an orderly manner. Following these instructions helps prevent occupational accidents, protects our health, and ensures the continuity of work processes. Remember: Following instructions means protecting both ourselves and our colleagues.
Occupational accidents must be reported to the Social Security Institution (SGK) within 3 working days at the latest following the accident. Occupational diseases must be reported to SGK by the employer within 3 working days at the latest from the date the employer becomes aware of the occupational disease. An administrative fine is imposed for notifications that are not made within the prescribed period.
In line with the “Occupational Health and Safety Implementation Guide for Public Universities,” revised and published in January 2025 by the Directorate General of Occupational Health and Safety of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Labour and Social Security, information meetings were held in all units of our University regarding the obligations, processes, and occupational health and safety activities specified in the Guide. During these meetings, unit managers and employees were informed about risk assessment, emergency planning, employee training, health surveillance, inspection of work equipment, use of personal protective equipment, and other occupational health and safety requirements stipulated in the legislation. A roadmap for the implementation of the Guide was also shared. In addition, in accordance with the Regulation on Occupational Health and Safety Boards, Occupational Health and Safety Boards have been established in units with 50 or more employees, and board meetings are held regularly within the scope of the Regulation. Our Coordination Office continues to carry out coordination activities for the implementation of the Guide and the relevant provisions of the legislation.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to equipment used to protect employees against occupational accidents and occupational diseases. All personnel working at our University are required to use PPE appropriate to their work, such as gloves, masks, safety goggles, and work clothing, regularly and correctly. The use of PPE both protects employee health and contributes to the creation of a safe working environment.
In accordance with the provisions of the Regulation on Emergencies in Workplaces, dated 18 June 2013 and numbered 28681, first aid training was provided to personnel assigned to first aid teams in the units of our University, under the coordination of our Coordination Office, by trainers from the Kütahya Provincial Health Directorate.
In emergency situations such as fire or earthquake, the building should be evacuated quickly and safely through the nearest emergency exit without panic. Emergency escape routes and exits must always be kept clear and unobstructed. Directional signs should be followed to reach the designated assembly area, where the instructions of authorized personnel should be awaited. Fire cabinets and fire extinguishers should only be used when necessary and by trained personnel. Being prepared for emergencies is of great importance for ensuring life safety.
In accordance with Law No. 6331 on Occupational Health and Safety and the Regulation on the Procedures and Principles of Occupational Health and Safety Training for Employees, basic occupational health and safety training is mandatory for employees. Pursuant to Article 8 of the Regulation, basic training must be completed as soon as possible after the employee starts work and no later than three months thereafter. The aim of the training is to raise employees’ awareness of workplace hazards and risks and to promote a safe working culture.
